Development Network

St Pauls 2

From ‘Neighbourly’, a rapid response project by Jamie Sinclair

The Trust maintains a network of emerging photographers, offering online previews for new work, project development assistance, and the opportunity to apply for education and development bursaries and other ad hoc opportunities such as our series of rapid response projects exploring different reactions to the coronavirus pandemic.

Membership of this network is by invitation only; applicants to our annual Award who make longlist stage automatically qualify.

Education and Development Bursaries

In 2018 we implemented a pilot programme for education and project development funds. We’re offering photographers in our network the opportunity to pitch annually for three kinds of bursaries:

  1. to run a photography workshop with the public
  2. to take part in a professional development opportunity
  3. to get a new project off the ground

In our first year we funded a storytelling workshop with a group of Syrian refugees, a professional development workshop exploring the ethics and rights surrounding photographic subjects, and provided a professional mentor to an emerging artist. Applications for our second round have recently closed. Details of projects will be shared soon.

Online Preview series

Every few months we feature and promote a project by one of the photographers in our network. Recently we’ve previewed Rebecca Conway’s work on avoidable blindness in India and Tanya Houghton’s exploration of aboriginal maps shared through song.

Project support

We provide further support to photographers in our network in a number of ways – all with the aim of advancing of new work in narrative photography. For example, we make small discretionary contributions to crowdfunding campaigns, we proof-read applications for other awards, we share work and publicise exhibitions with our followers, and we maintain up-to-date information on opportunities and resources available to emerging artists.
